Virtual Private Network
VPN links were once commonplace but have now given way to more contemporary Work From Anywhere solutions. VPN technology allowed clients to tunnel into their Head Office remotely, typically while at home or on the road.
Virtual Private Network or VPN technology still has some use and at General Data we continue to support this type of technology for customers who rely on it to connect to certain legacy systems.
Data Points
Information to be aware of when discussing conventional Virtual Private Networks:
01. Working Full-Time from a Home Office
We install a VPN router at your office and configure your computer to connect to it securely using a VPN client. A fully functioning home office complete with the ability to scan and print, plus access to network folders is accomplished by installing a teleworker gateway and thus establishing a permanent, secure two-way link between offices.
It should be noted that in recent times, the WFA or Work From Anywhere strategy has begun to supersede VPN technology. To learn more about WFA strategies, click here.
02. Connecting Any and All Remote Offices
Some clients have more than one office. If you have multiple locations and want to connect all the offices together, you may want to establish Gateway to Gateway VPN connections or what we call a “Mesh-Network”. Once all the offices are meshed together, people in any office can send print jobs to different printers, share documents on server drives and everyone can use software and applications located centrally.
Most of these requirements are now met by migrating to the Microsoft 365 cloud. To find out more click here.
04. Q: "Can I do this using Wireless or WiFi?"
Yes. VPN is designed to allow mobile users who carry notebook PC or a Microsoft Surface® the ability to connect to your place of business remotely. The concept allows a mobile user to connect to the office while operating in a public WiFi hotspot or if connected to the Internet using Mobile Cellular.
